The Truth Behind Refined Flour

The Truth Behind Refined Flour

Refined flour, commonly known as maida, is made from wheat but undergoes bleaching and processing that removes nutrients. It’s used in various foods like naan, pizza, cakes, and pasta. Historically, refined flour became popular in India during the Mughal era, and its bleaching process involves chemicals such as benzoyl peroxide and chlorine. While it enhances texture and shelf life, refined flour has several health risks. It is linked to cancer (due to bleaching agents), coeliac disease, diabetes, coronary artery disease, bone loss, and mental health issues. Refined flour can also harm gut health, leading to digestion problems and weight gain. To avoid these risks, it’s advised to limit processed foods, read labels carefully, and choose whole, home-cooked meals.
